OTTAWA, Aug. 5, 2014 /CNW/ - The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) announced today that Dr. Barbara Stubbs of Toronto will receive the 2014 May Cohen Award for Women Mentors. This award is presented to a female physician who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to mentoring others.
"Dr. Stubbs has demonstrated outstanding mentoring abilities by providing both support and challenge to her mentees," said Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti, CMA President. "Her unique ability to help her mentees build connections within and across the communities in which they practice, all while encouraging a healthy work-life balance, makes her highly deserving of this award."
"I truly believe that effective mentorship is all about the ways we can provide meaningful collegial support, balanced by professional development challenge. As busy physicians we must learn to take advantage of mentorship moments, whether as providers or recipients," said Dr. Stubbs. "Mentorship is a key factor for career success and satisfaction. It is relevant no matter what stage of our careers we are in."
Dr. Barbara Stubbs is a clinical educator and family physician who practises at Toronto Western Hospital. Her academic base is the University of Toronto where she is an associate professor and Director of the Professional Development Program for the Department of Family and Community Medicine. The founder and first director of the medical faculty's Standardized Patient Program, she has taught medical trainees for more than 25 years.
A medical graduate of the University of Toronto, she was awarded fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2001. In addition to multiple teaching awards she has received distinction awards from the University of Toronto, and the Educating Future Physicians for Ontario collaboration.
Dr. Stubbs is the 14th recipient of the CMA's May Cohen Award for Women Mentors. An awards ceremony is being held at the Westin Ottawa on Aug. 20 as part of the CMA's 147th annual meeting.
