One of Canada's top global healthcare leaders to help guide the safety and quality of EQ Care's virtual healthcare
MONTREAL, May 21, 2020 /CNW Telbec/ - (EQ Care): EQ Care, Canada's pioneer in telemedicine, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Hartley Stern, MD FRCSC FACS ICD.D, to its Board of Directors, where he will aid in the creation and implementation of best practices in healthcare management.
Dr. Stern joins Canada's only ISO 9001:2015 certified virtual care provider following a six-year term as CEO of the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), which helps Canada's ~100,000 physicians reduce the risk in their practices, and improve the safety of the Canadian healthcare system.
"I am pleased to serve the Board of EQ Care because I believe that their approach to virtual health care centered on compassion, empathy and trust is the optimal approach to offering high-quality, accessible healthcare to Canadians, particularly in times of crisis," said Dr. Stern. "Daniel Martz and his team understand that the principal focus of any leader in healthcare must be to improve quality and safety of care for patients. All else is secondary."
Prior to joining the CMPA in 2013, Dr. Stern served as the CEO and Executive Director of the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) in Montreal beginning in 2008, focusing on patient safety and strategic partnerships. Dr. Stern also served as the Provincial Head of Surgical Oncology with Cancer Care Ontario, and as CEO of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre.
Relentless Dedication to Quality of Care
A Toronto native, Dr. Stern has published nearly 200 scientific papers as an academic surgeon and brings to EQ Care a proven track record of improving patient outcomes, including leading institutions whose policies helped to reduce cancer mortality in Ontario and across Canada.
"Dr. Stern is one of Canada's most respected healthcare executives, and is an inspiring leader with unparalleled institutional knowledge and insight," said EQ Care's CEO Daniel Martz. "Dr. Stern's perspectives are invaluable as we work tirelessly to create new standards of quality and safety in the Canadian virtual care industry, particularly in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic."
"The guiding principle for my leadership of each organization has been the democratization of healthcare, through a relentless pursuit of optimizing quality of care," said Dr. Stern, who will support EQ Care with challenges related to long-distance cancer care, particularly in rural Canada. "Patients living in remote communities do not share the same access to the kind of exceptional care as those in urban centres. With perfected virtual care technology, we will soon achieve the ultimate objective of levelling the playing field for healthcare outcomes."
