TORONTO, Oct. 31, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, congratulated the winners of Canada's Safest Employers Awards at the 3rd annual gala in Toronto last night.
"Our government remains focused on the economy and keeping Canadian workplaces safe, fair and productive," said Minister Leitch. "These awards are proof that by paying attention to the safety and well-being of employees, employers can markedly improve productivity and performance, while decreasing workplace accidents and injury."
Canada's Safest Employers Awards recognize employers who demonstrate exceptional health and safety practices in industries ranging from manufacturing and health care to hospitality and transportation.
In her speech, Minister Leitch encouraged employers and employees to take proactive measures to prevent accidents and fatalities on the job.
"Creating safe and healthy workplaces across Canada is a shared responsibility," added Minister Leitch. "Employers, employees, governments and organizations all have a role to play."
The Government of Canada Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and health and safety regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code, for federally regulated workers and employers.
