MONTREAL, Sept. 8, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Jean-François Welch and Martin Bussières, founding partners of DS Welch Bussières, are pleased to announce the appointment of firm counsel Bruce McNiven as a member of the Order of Canada. The announcement was part of the recent Canada Day appointments, and Mr. McNiven will receive his insignia from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
"Bruce McNiven's commitment to good corporate citizenship and community involvement are wholly consistent with the values of the firm," Mr. Welch said. "He is a cultural entrepreneur whose engagement in the practice of law is complemented by his special talent for connecting the country's social, cultural, architectural, art and community milieu to help create, maintain and promote Canadian heritage in its broadest sense."
As an exemplary volunteer, Mr. McNiven has been deeply involved in the life of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as a Trustee for some 30 years. He has been instrumental in the enrichment of its Permanent Collection and chaired the Building Committee that oversaw the conversion and expansion of the former Erskine and American Church into the award winning Bourgie Pavilion of Quebec and Canadian Art. He has spent many years in major roles with the Heritage Montreal Foundation and is a past president of the St. Andrew's Society of Montreal. He sits on a number of community, educational and health and social service boards including the Drummond Foundation, founded and led by previous generations of his family, the Cole Foundation and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, where he is a founding member.
Mr. McNiven is also one of the three founding Board members of the OSMO Foundation that purchased, renovated and repurposed the historic Notman House in Montreal, recently launched as a not-for-profit technology start-up campus for young entrepreneurs in Montreal's new media business sector.
A passionate Montrealer, Bruce McNiven believes in the vital importance and necessity of using the present, public and private community resources to forge a link between the past and the future. This commitment is exemplified by his many initiatives to preserve both our cultural and architectural heritage and allow it to play a positive and dynamic role in contemporary life.
The partners and staff of DS Welch Bussières extend their warm congratulations to Bruce McNiven on this award.
