Dutton/Dunwich is 80th unwilling host to wind power

TORONTO, March 13, 2014 /CNW/ - With a vote Wednesday at Dutton-Dunwich, Ontario now has 80 municipalities that have declared themselves "unwilling hosts" to large-scale wind power developments.

"Ontario's municipalities want local land use planning returned," says Wind Concerns Ontario president Jane Wilson. "We want to make decisions for our own communities. Wind power projects have a significant impact on community life; local governments need to be able to protect their citizens."

The declaration is important: Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli stated in the Legislature March 5 that there "will need to be an agreement with the municipality to move forward with new projects" in future. 

While Chiarelli also said Ontario has surplus power, the Ontario Government continues to push 55 projects with FIT contracts through approvals, which the Minister confirms will cost Ontario electricity users $22 billion over the life of the contracts. 

At the Feed-in-Tariff conference being held in Toronto March 18, municipal leaders from Unwilling Host communities will participate in a panel discussion, "Why is My Community Opposing Wind."
