Until OCTOBER 12TH
Presented and commissioned by PANAMANIA, presented by CIBC

TORONTO, Aug. 26, 2015 /CNW/ - Gone are the days when athletic apparel was defined by the basic laces and fabrics of running shoes and tired out T-shirts. With the recent rapid innovative growth of athletic clothing, equipment, and wearables, Design Exchange (DX), Canada's Design Museum, has kicked off the satellite exhibition, Smarter. Faster. Tougher. which dives into the evolution of sportswear. Hot off the heels of the PanAm Games, the sports fever is still high as this exhibition runs full speed ahead until October 12th.
Located in the Distillery District, Smarter. Faster. Tougher. is the second DX Satellite exhibition, a direction that sees DX programming located within various neighbourhoods throughout the city of Toronto. By taking cultural experiences beyond the bricks and mortar of the DX building, this new satellite series offers a broad and diverse demographic the opportunity to engage with, and enjoy all the most forward thinking design exhibits in the country.
Presented by Panamania and CIBC, the exhibit uncovers four sections – ethnographics, nature, fashion and performance – examining how technology, fashion, nature and culture have contributed to the evolution of sportswear today and its wider cultural, social and aesthetic significance. With sexy and technologically savvy sportswear exploding onto the market, it's clear the influence of sport in fashion won't be sidelined anytime soon.
It's not just Wimbledon and the World Cup that have athleticism on the fashion agenda. Sporty chic is a running theme for many of today's major designers who are representing both athletic and athleisure attire. Find dozens of looks and gear from Umbro, Rip Curl, Bioracer, Mountain Hardwear, Valiant, Descente, Puma x Cedella Marley, Fred Perry, Speedo, Tommy Hilfiger, Canada Goose x eepmon, Blue Glue, Loudmouth Golf, Marloes ten Bhömer, Stella McCartney x Adidas, and more. See innovations such as a 3D printed bikini, shark-resistant wetsuits, cardigans that incorporate bulletproof material, and shirts with heart rate monitoring systems. From fashion to fitness, behold the meeting of two opposite ends of the sartorial spectrum.
The ubiquitous nature of sport has been seamlessly captured by curator Marie O'Mahony, a professor of Digital Futures at OCAD University and visiting professor at University of the Arts, London. Visitors will see the clothing, equipment, and accessories that enhance performance and were worn by world-celebrated athletes. Additionally, a special app designed by Digital Futures at OCADU was created to be used throughout.
