Company boosts its annual support of the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life to almost $100,000
OTTAWA, May 20, 2014 /CNW/ - Every three minutes another Canadian is faced with fighting cancer. Picture thousands of people - friends, families, co-workers and cancer survivors - united together for one night, for one common cause. This is what will be happening in June when people in Ottawa, Kanata, Orléans and Nepean come together to fight back against a disease that touches far too many people. This year, the Society in Ottawa has received added support from Economical Insurance who has committed $25,000 in title sponsorships towards the charity's four local Relay For Life events.
Relay For Life is a 12-hour overnight fundraiser that brings communities together to celebrate life and fight cancer. Teams of 10 to 15 gather with cancer survivors at the venues listed below and take turns walking laps all night long. Each team keeps at least one member on the track at all times, while all around them the party is in full swing. Teams stay overnight in decorated tent cities, united in their celebration of life with music, food, activities and entertainment.
This June, four Relay For Life events will be held in the Ottawa area:
- Ottawa South: Country Hoedown. May 23, 7 p.m. - 7 a.m., Stanley's Olde Maple Lane Farm, Edwards
- Ottawa Centre: Extreme Relay. June 6, 7 p.m. - 7 a.m., Nepean Sportsplex
- Ottawa East: Relay Around the World. June 13, 7 p.m. - 7 a.m., Millennium Park, Orléans
- Ottawa West: Corporate Challenge. June 13, 7 p.m. - 7 a.m., Walter Baker Park, Kanata.
"We are thankful for Economical Insurance's increased commitment to Relay For Life," said Martin Kabat, CEO, Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division. "The support of corporate partners like Economical helps us to raise money to fund life-saving cancer research, and to offer support services which help local cancer patients and their families, such as our Wheels of Hope transportation program which helped 379 Ottawa residents get to cancer treatment last year."
Economical Insurance has been a proud Relay For Life sponsor since 2006. With today's announcement, the company boosts its title sponsorship of the Canadian Cancer Society's signature fundraiser to $94,500, supporting 10 events in Ontario and Quebec.
"We are thrilled to have expanded our partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life to include all four events in the Ottawa area this year," said Karen Gavan, Economical's president and chief executive officer. "Relay for Life is not only vital to the fight against cancer. It also raises hope that one day the leading cause of premature death in Canada will be eradicated. From participating in the Survivor's Victory Lap, to remembering those lost or battling cancer through the Luminary Ceremony, to fundraising together, everyone who takes part always leaves enriched with a sense of having actively participated as a cancer fighter."
