Edmonton Men Grow Moustaches To Raise $1 Million For Prostate Cancer
EDMONTON, Oct. 21 /CNW/ - Movember Edmonton - The beginning of November marks the start of the month-long fundraising effort Movember, which challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men's health by growing a moustache. Movember Edmonton has set a goal of $1 Million to go toward Prostate Cancer Canada.
Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men and teams of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days, starting clean shaven at the beginning of the month. The funds from Movember will be donated to Prostate Cancer Canada for the development of awareness, education and support programs for those affected by the disease, as well as research into the prevention, detection, treatment and cure.
To help kick-start Movember in Edmonton, Movember co-founder and CEO, Adam Garone will be in the city appearing at various events on November 1. Garone has grown Movember from an idea over beers in Melbourne, Australia in 2004, to a multi-national fundraising effort taking place in nine countries worldwide. "It's humbling to see so many men and women passionately support this cause," says Garone.

Why all the moustaches? It's time men and women understand the facts:
- 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed.
- 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. One new case occurs every 2.7 minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 19 minutes.
- Rates of prostate cancer in men are comparable to rates of breast cancer in women.
- The World Health Organization projects that in 2010, cancer will become the leading cause of death globally, surpassing heart disease and stroke.
Movember's 2010 Canadian major partners include Canadian Club, Mercedes-Benz Canada, and Schick.
