OTTAWA, June 5, 2014 /CNW/ - Today, Egg Farmers of Canada is hosting its first Downtown Diner in Ottawa, raising money to help their long-time partner Food Banks Canada.
Members of Parliament, Senators, Hill staffers and the public are invited to drop by this unique outdoor diner to get a complimentary sandwich made with fresh, local, and high-quality eggs. While the diner is open—from 7:00 a.m. EDT to 1:30 p.m. EDT—Egg Farmers of Canada will accept voluntary donations to Food Banks Canada and will match the total amount.
"Giving back to the community has always been a core value for Canadian egg farmers," says Egg Farmers of Canada Chairman, Peter Clarke. "Today is a wonderful opportunity to say thank you to Canadians that consume and trust our product and in return raise money for a great cause and partner, Food Banks Canada."
The relationship between the two organizations goes as far back as 20 years ago, and has been very rewarding for both parties.
"Our organization supports food banks across the country to ensure they can help Canadians across the country to relieve hunger today while we work to find long-term solutions so we can prevent hunger tomorrow," says Katharine Schmidt, Executive Director of Food Banks Canada. "Our long-time partner, Egg Farmers of Canada, donated over 1 million eggs to our network of food banks last year and continues to raise awareness of our organization with exciting events like this Downtown Diner."
Local Chef and owner of the famous restaurant Town, Marc Doiron, created a special recipe for the egg sandwich and will be making them onsite for guests.
Canadian eggs are among the best in the world on the basis of quality, freshness, food safety and farming practices. Egg farmers from across the country will be on site at the Downtown Diner, speaking to Members of Parliament and the public about supply management, the unique system that helps maintain these standards.
