Eh guess what? Canadians continue to make a point of buying Canadian
TORONTO, June 22, 2015 /CNW/ - Ninety-two per cent of Canadians still try to make a point of purchasing Canadian brands and Canadian products, according to a survey by Ebates.ca, a leader in online cash back shopping.
When asked to define what makes a brand "Canadian," the majority of people say that "most of the brand's products are made in Canada" (68 percent), followed closely by "most of the brand's workforce is based in Canada" (57 percent).
The primary motivations for trying to buy Canadian products and brands are pragmatic. According to the survey, over three quarters of the country (77 percent) buy Canadian to support the economy; while 66 percent report they are loyal to help keep jobs in Canada.
"Even though there are less expensive internationally produced items readily available, Canadian consumers are clearly loyal to Canadian brands and merchandise when it comes to their purchase decisions," says Adrienne Down Coulson, General Manager, Ebates Canada. "The survey results show us that Canadian consumers do their research and make educated decisions balancing cost savings with supporting the local economy."
Canadian product loyalty and gender
The top five products that Canadians are most likely to purchase from Canadian producers include food items (87 percent), beer (46 percent), clothing (45 percent), furniture (38 percent) and wine (34 percent).
Fifty-six percent of the male respondents are more likely to purchase Canadian beer, whereas 49 percent of female respondents are more likely to support Canadian clothing brands.
Canadian product loyalty and age
Seems that the older we get, the more loyal we are to our country. Canadians over 45 are more likely to buy Canadian brands and products and the two main reasons (keeping jobs in Canada & supporting our economy) are more favoured by the older demographic.
