Eight-movie lineup unveiled for favourite Vancouver tradition -- free outdoor movies in Stanley Park
Sing-Alongs, Dinosaurs, Superheroes and Harry Potter, too
VANCOUVER, June 16, 2015 /CNW/ - Summer in Vancouver just got even more amazing, as some of film fans' favourites hit the big screen for the Evo Summer Cinema series: the sixth annual, free weekly outdoor movie event hosted by Fresh Air Cinema. Running from July 7 to August 25, every Tuesday at dusk, the series will feature a selection of films on the Grand Lawn at Ceperley Meadow near Second Beach in Stanley Park.
Evo Car Share, created by BCAA, along with Fresh Air Cinema are excited to reveal this year's movie lineup, after conducting a movie poll which asked Evo Members and Vancouver film fans to vote via Vancity Buzz for one of the movies to be featured this summer.
"Watching an outdoor movie in Stanley Park is a true Vancouver experience that's special to so many people," says Shan Parmar, Director of Evo Car Share. "Evo is all about the B.C. lifestyle such as cycling, skiing, and this summer, attending an outdoor movie event with friends. All our cars come with bike and ski racks, are roomier and can fit five passengers so that people can pack up their picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy watching a movie in the park."
With over 4,000 votes, the Evo Summer Cinema movie poll revealed Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" as the film fans' favourite, putting it on this year's movie lineup. Runner-up film, this summer's Hulk-size hit "Avengers: Age of Ultron", was also so popular it was added to the schedule, and closes out the series.
This summer's eight audience-friendly films for the Evo Summer Cinema series offers four new-to-series flicks as well as four returning favourites: "Pitch Perfect – Sing Along Version" (2012) – July 7; "The Breakfast Club" – 30th Anniversary (1985) – July 14; "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989) – July 21; "Grease – Sing Along Version" (1978) – July 28; "Top Gun" (1986) – August 4; "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (2001) – August 11; "Jurassic Park" (1993) – August 18 (Evo movie poll winner); "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015) – August 25.
"Stanley Park is the jewel in the crown of Vancouver, and has proven to be one of the most perfect locations to host a free summer movie night that the whole family can enjoy," says Jason Bashnick, Fresh Air Cinema festival organizer. "Each year, for the past five years, we've seen audiences per night grow and now thousands of people attend these events—people simply love the experience of watching a free movie under the stars. This year is going to be bigger, and even better – with many brand-new activities and one of the best movie lineups we've ever curated. There'll be something special for everyone."
Fresh Air Cinema uses a four-storey-high inflatable movie screen to create a complete movie theatre experience. Their crews transform Stanley Park's Ceperley Meadow into a magical, custom-made outdoor movie theatre in a matter of hours. All events are free to the public and begin at dusk.
With thousands expected in the audience each week, guests are encouraged to walk, take transit, cycle or car pool with friends using a car share program to get to the show. Second Beach is a short seawall walk from the West End and minutes from the Stanley Park bus loop; a bike valet service is also offered on-site each night.
Lawn seating at Ceperley Meadow is free and plentiful with space for picnic blankets or lawn chairs. On a first-come-first-serve basis, guests are encouraged to arrive early and can expect many fun pre-show activities to do and see, including: games, prizes and giveaways, weekly offering of food truck fare, along with classic movie treats. Evo Members and audiences will also be eligible for prize draws and seating upgrades to special blanket seating. Every week, audiences will be eligible to sign up for a free Evo Membership and 30 free minutes.
Back by popular demand, Fresh Air Cinema and Yellow Pages will have their 100-seat reserved VIP area where guests can purchase a front-of-house Adirondack chair online and enjoy a guaranteed seat at any movie night. In partnership with several restaurants in the West End BIA, the festival will also offer nightly "Dinner & a Movie" packages with a delicious dinner at a local restaurant then a reserved seat at the park for one low price. These special seating programs go on sale for all films starting Tuesday, June 16 at SummerCinema.ca
