Election for AFN Regional Chief to be Held on Jan 31, 2013

CALGARY, Jan. 28, 2013 /CNW/ - Nominees for the position of the Representative of the Chiefs of Treaties 6-7-8 (Alberta) to the Assembly of First Nations Executive, known as the AFN Regional Chief (Alberta) have been announced and the election will be held on January 31, 2013. The AFN Regional Chief is elected by a majority of Chiefs to represent them at the AFN Executive, AFN assemblies and any other meetings as may be required and/or authorized by the Chiefs of the Assembly of Treaty Chiefs.

The nominees for AFN Regional Chief (Alberta) are Cameron Alexis of Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Sandford Big Plume of Tsuu T'ina Nation, Leila Houle of Whitefish Lake First Nation, Wayne Moonias of Louis Bull Tribe, and Dustin Twin of Swan River First Nation.

Nominee Leila Houle said: "I am looking forward to the election for AFN Regional Chief of Alberta. Canada and Alberta are at a crossroads in respect to the government to government relationship with Canada's First Nations. I am eager to be involved in First Nation's governance at a turning point in Canada's history…we have to work together and understand one another. I believe that my youth, education, energy and attitude would benefit Alberta First Nations."

Leila Houle is no stranger to politics and showed a passion for both politics and her community at a young age. While attending the University of Alberta, she was president of the U of A Aboriginal Students' Association and organized the Aboriginal Student Womens' Association. In 2004, Leila Houle obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Alberta. Leila Houle also ran in the 2008 federal election as the Liberal candidate of Westlock - St.Paul riding. Currently, she is a public relations consultant and Life Skills instructor.

The election will be held at the Coast Plaza Conference Centre in Calgary, AB on January 31, 2013. Term of office for the Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief (Alberta) will be from January 31, 2013 to June 30, 2015.
