Esker Foundation grand opening exhibition gives voice and opportunity to young Alberta artists
CALGARY, May 30, 2012 /CNW/ - All eyes will be on a select group of 44 emerging Alberta artists as the focus of the Esker Foundation's grand opening exhibition, "The New Alberta Contemporaries", on display at the gallery from June 15 - August 29 in the historic Inglewood area of Calgary.
Conceived as a cultural platform for innovative and exceptional contemporary art exhibitions, Esker's mission is to encourage public dialogue about visual arts in an approachable environment. The gallery's inaugural show, "The New Alberta Contemporaries", is a 10-week exhibition with a series of parallel events bringing together 2010-2012 graduating seniors in BFA, MFA or PhD programs from the University of Calgary, Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD), the University of Alberta, and the University of Lethbridge.
"This exhibition is a exciting snapshot of an important cultural moment in the province of Alberta," says curator Caterina Pizanias, Esker Foundation. "We're thrilled to showcase these 44 recent fine arts graduates from across the province."
Following "The New Alberta Contemporaries", Esker has planned a dynamic lineup of art exhibitions that are free of charge to visitors, and the gallery will offer a regular and ongoing program of educational and ancillary events such as lectures and artist presentations to accompany the exhibitions.
"Educational and art institutions have been hit with cutbacks that have prompted transformations and revaluations which might not be the best for either art or education," says Pizanias. "This exhibition reflects Esker's core belief in supporting creative and educational initiatives by celebrating arts institutions and their members from Alberta and beyond."
