Energizer Canada and the Government of Canada Encourage Canadians to Be
Prepared for at least 72 Hours
TORONTO, April 20 /CNW/ - Natural disasters and extreme weather conditions remind Canadians of the need to be prepared. As an extra reminder, the first week of May (May 2-8th) has been designated as Emergency Preparedness Week, a national campaign coordinated by Public Safety Canada together with all provinces and territories, that reminds Canadians of the items that they should have on hand in case of an emergency.
Energizer Canada and the Government of Canada want to ensure that Canadian households have the essentials for at least 72 hours in the case of an emergency. "Energizer wants to ensure that Canadian households plan, prepare and protect so they are able to Keep Going in all emergency situations," said Associate Brand Manager at Energizer Canada, Jill MacKinnon.
There are three steps that every household should follow to ensure they are prepared:
- Know the potential risks in your region so you can determine items that you would require in the case of a weather related event or other emergency; - Make a plan that incorporates how everyone in your household could self-sustain for at least 72 hours; - Build your household emergency kit with the items that you would need for at least 72 hours.
Even with the increase in the number of weather-related emergencies, many Canadians are still not prepared. A recent Government of Canada survey found that a gap exists between those who believe they have an emergency kit (43 percent) and those whose kits contain all the recommended basic items (estimated at 8 percent). Some basic kit items include: water, non-perishable food items, battery powered radio (with extra batteries) and a flashlight.
To raise awareness and educate Canadians on all the necessary contents of an emergency kit, Energizer Canada is helping Canadians understand what they need to have on hand, just in case. Flashlights and extra batteries are just two items integral to every family's household emergency kit so during the month of May, Energizer will be giving away an emergency kit everyday plus other items that are helpful in the case of a disaster.
