Energy Professionals welcome Premier's cap and trade plan
TORONTO, April 14, 2015 /CNW/ - The Society of Energy Professionals welcomes the Premier's announcement yesterday on cap and trade. The Society strongly supports addressing climate change. Our members contribute to this daily with their work in nuclear and hydroelectric energy generation, which produces 80% of Ontario's energy supply and makes this province's power grid among the cleanest in the world.
The government's decision to introduce carbon pricing is an important step forward. The Society encourages the government to learn from the experiences of other jurisdictions to ensure Ontario's cap-and-trade system is well designed from the outset. The ideal system must be evidence-based, transparent, accountable, and apply equitably to all sources of pollutants that cause climate change.
We are encouraged by the Premier's statement that revenue will be reinvested in projects such as building more public transit. This new revenue stream should eliminate the need to privatize productive, profitable public assets, including Hydro One.
