Security forum demonstrates growing malware threats against digital identities

DALLAS, May 15, 2013 /CNW/ - Entrust Inc. delivered a strong message to key executives and IT decision-makers during the launch of their North American Roadshow last week: advanced malware threats targeting digital identities are growing at a rapid pace. The cybersecurity experts visited New York City and Washington, D.C., during the five-day event to focus on the critical need to properly secure digital identities, and how to leverage mobile devices and applications to combat highly targeted attacks.

"Today's malware is highly sophisticated, often with multilevel objectives to steal money, illegally obtain intellectual property and severely disrupt or cripple critical infrastructure," said Entrust President and CEO Bill Conner. Conner was joined at the forum by other leading cybersecurity experts, including the Honorable Michael Chertoff, chairman and co-founder of The Chertoff Group, and former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; General Michael V. Hayden, principal at The Chertoff Group and former director of the CIA; and Richard Stiennon, chief research analyst at IT-Harvest.

Discussions surrounded the significance of protecting and verifying identities, the need to use mobile devices and identities to defeat advanced malware and how to leverage digital certificates, among other topics.

Given the current threat climate, security-conscious organizations are making a large shift toward mobile security. Based on a recent report commissioned by Entrust — "Mobility Helps Enterprises Enter a New Age" conducted by Forrester Consulting — 60 percent of firms indicated in 2012 that creating a comprehensive mobile and tablet strategy for their employees was at least a moderate priority, while this year 54 percent of enterprise IT decision-makers are increasing their mobility investments.
