Equal Pay Day Rally Draws Attention to Gender Wage Gap
KINGSTON, ON, April 10, 2018 /CNW/ - Join us in front of Stauffer Library on the corner of University Avenue and Union Street, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today as we draw attention to the Gender Wage Gap.
Symbolically, April 10 represents the date in 2018 that, on average, a woman must work in addition to all of the previous year's work in order to have earned the same income as her male counterpart doing substantially the same work in the previous year.
In Ontario, the average hourly wage earned by women is 87.4% of that earned by men1. This wage gap is considerably worse for traditionally disadvantaged groups. For example, aboriginal women earn only 64% of that earned by non-aboriginal men2, and women with disabilities earn only 52% of that earned by men without disabilities3.
More information about the Gender Wage Gap in Ontario can be found on the Ontario Equal Pay Coalition website (http://equalpaycoalition.org/).
This event is being sponsored by the Queen's University Equity Office/Human Rights Office, the Alma Mater Society (AMS), USW 2010, and the Queen's University Faculty Association (QUFA). At the event we will have music, provide informational handouts regarding the gap between women's and men's wages, as well as provide hot and cold cider and special "=$" cookies.
The candidates from Kingston and the Islands for the June 7 provincial election have been invited to attend.
