Charity golf tournament raises money for innovative cardiac treatments
TORONTO, June 27, 2012 /CNW/ - On June 13, 2012, Ernst & Young partners, staff, clients and guests teed off for the Ernst & Young Charity Golf Classic in support of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, raising just over $200,000.
The tournament hosted over 220 golfers for a friendly competition at RattleSnake Point Golf Club in support of cardiovascular research and patient care.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Centre's Innovation Fund, a unique fundraising initiative that raises capital for innovation, development and evaluation of the newest cardiac and vascular therapies. These therapies allow physicians to treat patients who might otherwise be inoperable, often using minimally-invasive medical devices.
"Heart disease is the number one cause of hospitalization in Canada, underscoring the importance of finding new and innovative treatments," says Dr. Barry Rubin, Medical Director of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. "The Innovation Fund is currently fundraising for $2 million annually, and with the generous support of Ernst & Young's Charity Golf Classic, we're that much closer to our goal of transforming the way heart disease is treated in Canada and worldwide."
"As a responsible employer, we always strive to support and create positive change in our communities close to home and around the world. The Innovation Fund at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre is part of our local community but it has global reach and most importantly it's improving the survival rate of cardiovascular patients, everywhere," says Eric Rawlinson, Ernst & Young's Managing Partner, Greater Toronto Area.
"The success of the tournament would not have been possible without the support and generosity of our many sponsors, participants and volunteers. We would especially like to thank our title sponsors, Jeff and Honey Rubenstein, of Export Packers Company Limited and Trevor and Andrea Cohen, of Giftcraft Ltd.," says Jeffrey Tannenbaum, Partner at Ernst & Young and Chair of the Charity Golf Classic.
The Peter Munk Cardiac Centre is one of the largest cardiac centres in Canada. Since it opened in 1997, the Centre has saved and improved the lives of cardiac and vascular patients from around the world. Each year, approximately 17,000 patients receive innovative and compassionate care from multidisciplinary teams in the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, and the Centre trains more cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and vascular surgeons than any hospital in Canada. The Centre is based at the Toronto General Hospital and the Toronto Western Hospital - members of University Health Network. For more information please visit: www.petermunkcardiaccentre.ca.
