Event Advisory - Stand still to support media workers and peaceful demonstrators in Turkey
PRESENTED BY CJFE in partnership with the Initiative for Freedom of Expression in Turkey, IFEX, PEN Canada, Amnesty International Canada, Journalists for Human Rights, the Canadian Association of Journalists, and the Canadian Media Guild.
TORONTO, July 26, 2013 /CNW/ - Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is joining forces with 6 other like-minded organizations based in Toronto to answer a call from the Initiative for Freedom of Expression - Turkey to stand still in support of peaceful demonstrators and media workers in Turkey.
On Sunday, July 28th, at 12:00 pm sharp, representatives from seven media and human rights organizations will stand still in front of the Consulate-General of Turkey in Toronto (10 Lower Spadina Ave) for seven minutes — one for each individual who has been killed in connection with the recent protests in Turkey. This motionless form of protest, which has become an increasingly popular symbol of resistance with Turkish demonstrators, will represent the organizations' solidarity with those participating in and covering the recent protests in Turkey.
Participating organizations include IFEX, PEN Canada, Amnesty International Canada, Journalists for Human Rights (JHR), Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) and the Canadian Media Guild (CMG). If you are interested in supporting this action, please join us on Sunday July 28 to send a message to Turkish diplomats around the world about the importance of protecting free expression and assembly rights.
