Event hosted by the QMA - Québec's Minister of Health to open the 5th edition of the international Preventing Overdiagnosis conference Français
MONTRÉAL, Aug. 17, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - The Québec Minister of Health and Social Services, Gaétan Barrette, will be giving today the opening address for the 5th edition of the Preventing Overdiagnosis conference at 8:30 a.m. at the Québec City Convention Centre. From August 17 to 19, the Québec Medical Association (QMA), in collaboration with its partners, the Canadian Medical Association, Université Laval and Choosing Wisely Canada, is hosting this international meeting dedicated to overdiagnosis and its corollaries, overtreatment and overmedicalization.
"We are very pleased that the Minister of Health is speaking before the 350 international delegates who are also concerned about the risks related to overdiagnosis," stated QMA president Dr. Hugo Viens. "Although our association started the movement in 2013, Québec has fallen behind on this issue. It is essential that it now begin to address the appropriateness of care so as to reduce the health risks for patients and improve access to care."
According to the report Unnecessary Care in Canada by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, released last April, about 30% of some tests, treatments or procedures done in the country may not be necessary.
"We are at a crossroads," said QMA president Dr. Hugo Viens. "The increase in the budget share of health care spending (51% in Québec) cannot continue. The future of our health care systems is at stake. Unnecessary care is expensive, blocks access to care and creates risks for the health of patients. One could ask whether medicine is making us sick. These are the issues that will be discussed during the three days of the convention."
