Award recognizes outstanding achievements of prominent Atlantic family
HALIFAX, Sept. 15, 2014 /CNW/ - EY is pleased to present Atlantic Canada's Stanfield family with the Family Business Award of Excellence at the Atlantic Entrepreneur Of The Year gala on 3 October 2014.
"It's not every day that we're able to celebrate a family business that has stood such an immense test of time," says Jim Lutes, Atlantic Entrepreneur Of The Year program director. "The Stanfield family proves what is possible when a family business is able to sustain innovation and maintain values. We're thrilled to celebrate their legacy with our Family Business Award of Excellence."
This special award recognizes leaders of outstanding entrepreneurial families with a culture and tradition of successfully balancing business and family issues, growing the business through innovation, and contributions through philanthropic or social engagement. The families support these traditions with sustainable, long-term strategies that include effective and transparent corporate governance.
Charles E. Stanfield began his entrepreneurial journey in Prince Edward Island in 1856. Ten years later he moved to Nova Scotia to found Truro Woolen Mills. Charles' sons inherited the company in 1896 and incorporated it in 1906. The rest is history. Today, Stanfield's Limited is a leader in undergarment apparel.
"Innovation lies at the heart of the Stanfield family's success," says Lutes. "Their ability to continue developing cutting edge apparel that anticipates and meets evolving consumer demands is something we can all admire. It's that kind of entrepreneurial mindset that drives our country forward."
Family businesses create immense value for our economy and communities. An impressive 90% of companies in North America are family-owned businesses. That's not all. Family businesses:
- Employ 57% of North America's workforce
- Generate 60% of Canada's GDP
- Create 70% of all new jobs in North America
- Provide 50% of all charitable donations
"The Stanfield family is a part of history in Atlantic Canada," says Lutes. "It's an honour to recognize their success."
