MONTREAL, Aug. 5, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - The UQAM Centre de Design has unveiled its programming for Fall 2014. On the menu: user-centred, functional packaging and the best of Japanese object design.
Programming:
PACKPLAY
September 11 to November 2, 2014
Vernissage: Wednesday, September 10 at 6 p.m.
Lectures: September 10 and 11 at 2 p.m.
Curator: Sylvain Allard, professor at the UQAM School of Design
Launched in 2013 by Professor Sylvain Allard, the PACKPLAY project is a very contemporary reflection on the design of packaging: user-centred design. Making users central to the design process means understanding their expectations and assessing whether packaging adequately responds to them.
The project included teaching and research work submitted by several North American and European universities studying packaging design. The best packaging prototypes were selected for the exhibition. PACKPLAY positions packaging design as a specific field of design encompassing elements of industrial design, graphic design and commerce.
L'objet japonais
A panorama of contemporary design in Japan
November 20, 2014 to January 18, 2015
Vernissage: Wednesday, November 19 at 6 p.m.
Curator: Hiroshi Kashiwagi, professor at Musashino Art University
Previously shown in Los Angeles and Toronto, this exhibition, produced by the Japan Foundation, showcases 100 contemporary products from Japan, selected for the quality of their execution and for their uniquely Japanese characteristics. Of these objects, 89 are used in Japan today, while the other 11 reflect the post-war origins of modern Japanese product design.
"The 100 objects assembled here are drawn equally from popular culture and sophisticated design. Not all have the clean lines of modern design and the forms of several are more typical of traditional culture. These differences reflect the trends in Japanese design today," notes curator Hiroshi Kashiwagi. The exhibition will allow visitors to discover the world of Japanese objects on a quick trip to the land of the rising sun.
