Federal Election: The AFNQL congratulates the new elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and reminds him of his commitments Français
WENDAKE, QC, Oct. 20, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - During the federal election of October 19, 2015, Canada answered the national call for a significant change. The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador congratulates the newly Prime Minister elect, Mr. Justin Trudeau, for his significant victory.
The Chief of the AFNQL, Ghislain Picard, requests of the Liberal Party of Canada and the Prime Minister elect, Justin Trudeau, to put at the forefront First Nations' interests and the challenges they face by respecting his electoral platform. He would like to remind Justin Trudeau's of his words and invites him to start to build a nation-to-nation relationship with First Nations, with respect and in partnership.
"It is now time for the government of Canada to collaborate in the advancement and in the defense of the rights of First Nations. We are ready to work and to start a new nation-to-nation relationship with this new government. However, trust has to be rebuilt. It is essential that the elected Prime Minister respects the commitments he made in his electoral platform and that he rectifies the extremely poor conditions that the last ten years have left", declared Chief Picard.
Chief Picard also wishes to remind the Prime Minister that his government must respect its promise to begin the implementation of the recommendations contained in the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, therefore, among others, to immediately launch a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women.
