TORONTO, May 8, 2018 /CNW/ - The pressure was on as esteemed MASTERCHEF CANADA judges Michael Bonacini, Claudio Aprile, and Alvin Leung revealed that Jonathan Rahim, a Real Estate Agent from Winnipeg, Man., would be the fifth home cook to depart the MASTERCHEF CANADA Kitchen. A second chance awaits tonight's eliminated home cook, with Jonathan tapped to head to MASTERCHEF CANADA: REDEMPTION available at CTV.ca/MasterChefCanada to face off against last week's REDEMPTION winner and previously eliminated home cook Kaegan, for a chance to ultimately return to the MASTERCHEF CANADA Kitchen. MASTERCHEF CANADA returns next week on Tuesday, May 15 at 9 p.m. ET / 8 MT on CTV and CTV GO with an off-site Team Challenge at the McMichael Gallery.
Wearing ominous Black Aprons, the Top 8 Home Cooks returned to the MASTERCHEF CANADA Kitchen in tonight's episode to face an intense series of three consecutive French Cuisine Pressure Tests designed to showcase their skills, strengths, and reveal their culinary shortcomings. The first task: to prepare an Omelette made with two ingredients in four minutes, exhibiting perfect technique and timing, with the four home cooks behind the best Omelettes heading to the safety of the gallery, while the remaining four home cooks face a more difficult second Pressure Test.
The judges declared Eugene's Omelette nearly flawless, with Beccy's almost perfect results earning a close second. Andy and Michael G. round out the four home cooks excused from further Pressure Tests and safe from elimination. Remaining home cooks Jen, Jonathan, Marissa, and Nadia, face the second consecutive Pressure Test: a butter-basted steak cooked medium rare, with just 15 minutes to cook and rest their steaks. Jen and Nadia emerged as the second round winners, heading to the gallery and safe from the final Pressure Test and elimination.
In the third and final Pressure Test, Marissa and Jonathan faced off to create a Crème Caramel under a dome of sugar. With a scant cook time of 30 minutes, there was no room for error. Marissa was laser-focused but went into the challenge worried, as desserts are not her forte. A determined Jonathan moved forward very methodically, but showed fatigue after competing in the series of grueling back-to-back challenges.
Jonathan's dish had incredible flavour, but was undercooked, sauce-like and formless – resulting in his elimination from the competition.
Immediately following tonight's episode, eliminated home cook Jonathan goes head-to-head with Kaegan, who emerged as last week's REDEMPTION winner, as both home cooks compete for a chance to reclaim their white apron and the opportunity to return to the MASTERCHEF CANADA Kitchen in the CTV.ca digital exclusive, MASTERCHEF CANADA: REDEMPTION. Presented by Miele and hosted by esteemed judge Claudio Aprile at the Miele Experience Centre, viewers can watch the second head-to-head challenge now on CTV.ca/MasterChefCanada. The victor of tonight's REDEMPTION challenge will reclaim their white apron and step back into the MASTERCHEF CANADA Kitchen.
In the next all-new episode of MASTERCHEF CANADA, "The Magnificent Seven (+1)" (Tuesday, May 15 at 9 p.m. ET / 8 MT on CTV and CTV GO), eight MASTERCHEF CANADA home cooks – the remaining seven plus the home cook that emerges as the REDEMPTION winner – gather for an off-site Team Challenge in Kleinburg, Ont., at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, home to the iconic Group of Seven. The teams are tasked with preparing a tasting menu for seven esteemed recipients of the Order of Canada, including Marc Kielburger, co-founder of international youth charity Free The Children; and renowned Canadian television icon, CTV News Special Correspondent Lloyd Robertson. After consulting the distinguished dinner guests, the MasterChef Canada Judges determine the winning team. The losing home cooks face a Pressure Test, and potential elimination.
The remaining Top 7 home cooks vying for the title of MASTERCHEF CANADA and the $100,000 cash prize are:
- Eugene Cheng, Financial Advisor and Rowing Coach from Vancouver, B.C.
- Michael Griffiths, Mathematician from Richmond Hill, Ont.
