Financial literacy includes insurance literacy
Albertans urged to know their insurance coverage before disaster strikes
EDMONTON, Nov. 5, 2013 /CNW/ - November is Financial Literacy Month and Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) wants Albertans to learn more about how they can protect their homes, cars and businesses.
Financial Literacy Month aims to empower Canadians with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make responsible financial decisions in their lives.
"Mother nature has been particularly tough on Alberta this year and many Albertans found they did not have appropriate insurance coverage," says Bill Adams, IBC Vice-President, Western & Pacific. "Financial Literacy Month in November is the perfect time to increase your knowledge about insurance," he added.
Take the time during Financial Literacy Month to find out about your policies. Ask your insurance representative these questions:
Home Insurance
- What does my policy cover?
- Is there a specific kind of insurance for the type of home I live in (e.g., house, condo or apartment)?
- Are there risks I can't buy insurance for?
- What optional coverage is available?
- Should I make a claim for every loss?
Car Insurance
- If I get into a collision tomorrow, what kind of coverage can I expect under my policy?
- What optional coverage is available?
- Should I purchase collision insurance on an older car?
- What kind of deductible is recommended?
- Does the distance I travel affect my premium?
Business Insurance
- What kind of insurance do I need?
- Are there risks I can't buy insurance for?
- If my business is home-based, do I need special coverages?
- What does errors and omissions or malpractice insurance cover?
- What can I do to keep my premium down?
