Finding informative dental videos just got easier
The ODA launches YouTube channel housing informative dental videos
TORONTO, Feb. 20, 2013 /CNW/ - The Ontario Dental Association (ODA) has launched a YouTube channel, OntarioDentalAssoc, aimed at helping the public weed through the endless stream of dental-related videos.
"The ODA YouTube channel will play an important role in selecting appropriate and informative videos that can better serve the needs of patients looking for dental-related information," said Dr. Arthur Worth, President of the ODA. "We are scouring YouTube to select appropriate videos that are then reviewed by dentists - this is a great tool to help support patient education."
Due to the vast number of videos — that are ranked based on popularity that is calculated by the number of people who view them — it is often difficult for the public to search through them and find the most credible and informative pieces.
Typically, when visitors to YouTube are looking for a video that demonstrates what is involved with a common dental procedure, they are more likely to find videos of patients who have been sedated for dental treatment. These videos are often deemed entertaining and amusing. Unfortunately, they provide little information to the public about the procedure itself and what they can expect.
"I understand the nature of YouTube and that entertaining pieces garner the most interest, but there is a real need to flag more informative pieces to help educate users," says ODA President Dr. Worth. "When a patient is working with his or her dentist to address periodontal disease or something as simple as proper brushing and flossing techniques, a visual to help illustrate this can be extremely valuable."
