Former Prime Minister Paul Martin Awarded Third Annual Samuel Cunard Prize for Vision, Courage and Creativity
Queen Mary 2 Performs Rare Evening Sail Away to Celebrate Canada's 150th Anniversary
VALENCIA, Calif., Aug. 10, 2017 /CNW/ -- The Third Annual Samuel Cunard Prize for Vision, Courage and Creativity was awarded to Former Prime Minister Paul Martin today on board Cunard's flagship ocean liner Queen Mary 2. The ship was docked in Halifax, Nova Scotia, home of the company's founder, Sir Samuel Cunard.
Martin was joined by Captain Stephen Howarth, Master of Queen Mary 2, along with local dignitaries, port officials, and key members of the community including The Honorable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board of the Government of Canada; Karen Casey, Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance and the Treasury Board of the Province of Nova Scotia; Senator Jim Cowan; last year's prize recipient John Risley; and John Young and Allan Shaw, Co-Chairs, Canadian Maritime Heritage Foundation.
The award was inaugurated in 2015 to celebrate the company's 175th Anniversary in the ancestral home of its founder Sir Samuel Cunard. Created in partnership with the Canadian Maritime Heritage Foundation, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and Cunard, the award acknowledges an extraordinary individual who demonstrates the qualities exemplified by Samuel Cunard throughout his life.
To celebrate Canada's 150th Anniversary, Queen Mary 2 executed a rare sail away spectacle for residents of Halifax by performing a counter clockwise turn in the harbor to acknowledge the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic while escorted by Theodore Tugboat, The Spitfire, and HMCS Summerside. A naval artillery salute took place shore side from the wharf of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic with music provided by the Naval Reserve Band.
As part of today's activities, noted Cunard historian, John Langley, was honored at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic as he donated his extensive Cunard collection to the museum.
