Former Senator St. Germain lauded at TFN Legislature
TSAWWASSEN, BC, Nov. 20, 2012 /CNW/ - Recently-retired Senator Gerry St. Germain was recognized last night by the Tsawwassen First Nation Legislature for his contribution to ensuring the success of the TFN Treaty.
In a ceremony in front of the full Legislature and the public, TFN Chief Bryce Williams thanked former Senator St. Germain for "his role in providing advice and friendship in the development of the TFN Government" which was established in 2009. Chief Bryce added, "TFN was the first urban Treaty First Nation in Canada, and we appreciated Senator St. Germain's support as we implemented our Treaty and new self-government institutions. His positive attitude helped make this a positive experience that we and our future generations will benefit from."
Senator St. Germain congratulated TFN on making significant progress with its government, stating, "TFN is making remarkable progress since you received your self-government agreement. I share your pride and your hope for the future."
He said, "I encourage you to make strong leadership for your local economy a top priority, because a strong economy built on strong business relationships will provide a bright future for the Tsawwassen People… Your prosperity is on the horizon."
Most recently, Senator St. Germain chaired the Senate's Standing Committee on Aboriginal Peoples. He retired as a Senator earlier this month. He has been instrumental in ensuring that the voices of First Nations are heard in Ottawa.
