Government of Canada awards nearly $2.5 million to many businesses in the greater Québec City area

Businesses need to be able to rely on adequate resources to create and commercialize innovative products. In 2017, the Government of Canada adopted an ambitious plan to support innovative Canadian businesses. As a true economic driver, innovation is the key to Canada's success because it generates growth that benefits businesses and communities.
Thanks to CED's financial support, 14 businesses in Québec City area will be able to carry out projects that will generate total investments exceeding $7.5 million. The projects involve improving productivity by upgrading to leading-edge equipment, implementing commercialization strategies and diversifying activities. These contributions will also create over 70 permanent jobs in the area.
The repayable contributions of $2,451,032 were announced today by the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Member of Parliament for Québec and Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CED.
The 14 recipient businesses are as follows: Prémontex, Métal Perreault, Technologie Alpha Lazer, Momentum Technologies, Plastilab Technologies, Torngats Services Techniques, Qualtech, Maison d'affinage Maurice Dufour, Dynasty Wood Turning, Libéo, BiogasWorld Media, le Centre de l'émeu de Charlevoix, True Positive Medical Devices and Umanx.
The funding granted by the Government of Canada through CED's Quebec Economic Development Program (QEDP) will help the recipient businesses meet their growth objectives.

The project consists in improving the productivity of a manufacturer of hardwood stair components. Funded activities include the acquisition of strategic equipment needed for the automation of critical production steps to minimize loss and reduce manufacturing costs. CED's contribution will go toward the acquisition and implementation of programmable bonding and lathing equipment.
Founded in 1987, the Normand Siouï company in Wendake produces and commercializes hardwood (oak, maple and yellow birch) stair components and mouldings for floors, landings and door sills. The business employs 70 people, including 38 Indigenous persons, and distributes its products to major hardware chains, installers, wholesalers and manufacturers' agents in Canada and the United States. |
Repayable contribution of $425,000 out of a total investment of $1,094,000
The project consists in improving the business's growth and productivity through the acquisition of specialized production equipment. More specifically, project activities include the acquisition and installation of a programmable CNC plasma-cutting robotic cell and an industrial lift system. CED's contribution will go toward all project costs.
Founded in 1987, Métal Perreault runs a complex metalwork and steel structure manufacturing plant in Donnacona. The company has 98 employees and is a major supplier for North American businesses that deliver large-scale construction projects. |

Repayable contribution of $400,000 out of a total investment of $1,965,000
The project consists in improving the business's growth and productivity by integrating clean, less energy-intensive technologies and carrying out commercialization activities. The project includes building a production space in Saint-Marc-des-Carrières so the company can cut its own components. This location will also be used as a demonstration site. CED's contribution will be used specifically to acquire and install two new cutting cells, participate in trade shows and pay the salaries of market development representatives.
Founded in 2014, Technologie Alpha Lazer Inc. is an SME in Saint-Marc-des-Carrières that has five employees and is affiliated with Machitech Inc., which assembles and sells high-precision laser cutting machines for metal. |

Repayable contribution of $200,000 out of a total investment of $500,000
The project consists in improving the company's productivity through the acquisition of automation and numerically controlled machining equipment, and the upgrading of computer-assisted design and manufacturing software. More specifically, project activities include the acquisition of three automation and machining centres (3 axis, 5 axis and 6 axis) and Mastercam 2018 software (CAN and SolidWorks). CED's contribution will go toward all project costs.
Founded in 2000, Plastilab Technologies manufactures and assembles complex custom plastic and composite parts through industrial subcontracting, using thermoforming and machining processes (2D and 3D). This Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures company has 14 employees and regularly invests in research, development and innovation for its manufacturing processes. Its products and services are geared to the Canadian and U.S. markets. |

The project consists in supporting international commercialization activities for an innovative software solution. More specifically, project activities include meeting with market development consultants, hiring sales and client support personnel, acquiring cloud-computing infrastructure in Europe, participating in industry trade shows, promoting the software and adapting it to new market characteristics. CED's contribution will go toward all project costs.
Created in 2003, Momentum Technologies Inc. offers computer system design, implementation and management services for businesses. The firm is established in Québec City and has developed the innovative MANITOU software solution, helping businesses manage all their business processes in an automated integrated manner. |

The project consists in implementing the business's expansion strategy in the aerospace sector and carrying out commercialization activities to increase revenues from abroad. More specifically, project activities include acquiring specialized equipment to improve its non-destructive testing (NDT) services, obtaining aerospace industry certifications and performing a set of global marketing activities. CED's contribution will go toward all project costs.
Started in 2010, Torngats Services Techniques Inc. offers value-added NDT services used for inspecting and evaluating the integrity of materials (detection of surface cracks and corrosion, weld inspections, etc.). This innovative SME is based in Québec City and has around 50 employees. It adapts its inspection tools and procedures and develops advanced technological solutions. |

The project involves the commercial development of the company in North America, mainly in the United States. More specifically, project activities include hiring a representative in the United States, developing an integrated bid management tool, participating in trade shows and updating the website. Founded in 1996, Qualtech Inc. provides engineering, design and manufacturing services and the installation of stainless steel production equipment for agri-food and pharmaceutical industries. The project consists in diversifying the company's activities by implementing a micro-distillery that produces a fine alcohol of unique typicity in Canada. CED's contribution will go toward external activities and costs related to the construction of a new building and the acquisition of the required production equipment, including a still and reservoirs.
La Maison d'affinage Maurice Dufour Inc. has been producing and commercializing fine cheeses under the Famille Migneron trademark since 1994. Its best-known product is the "Migneron de Charlevoix." Located in Baie-Saint-Paul, this SME has around 20 employees and wants to diversify its activities with the implementation of a craft micro-distillery that will use a process for converting whey into alcohol and recovering grape must. |

The purpose of the project is to increase the business's productivity and boost its production and product development capacity. As part of the client's growth strategy, the project consists in acquiring, installing and marketing leading-edge equipment, namely a 10-axis CNC lathe machine-tool. CED's contribution will go toward all project costs.
Founded in 1983, Dynasty Wood Turning Ltd. specializes in the manufacture of custom hardwood furniture components. The company has 25 employees and develops and makes products for North American manufacturers in its Saint-Marc-des-Carrières plant. |

The project consists in developing and commercializing BiogasWorld.com, the largest Web platform in the global biogas industry, to bring together key industry players and foster the creation of links between product and service suppliers and project developers. CED's contribution will go toward new developments in the Web platform and toward commercialization activities to increase the business's visibility and sales through participation in trade shows and prospecting missions, and the design and translation of marketing tools and ad placements.
Founded in 2015 in Québec City, BiogasWorld Media Inc. is a small start-up that has developed an online commercial, technical and informational platform connecting and bringing together all the actors in the global biogas industry with a view to fostering the transition to this renewable energy. |

The purpose of the project is to ensure the growth of an innovative business by improving its productivity and rolling out a commercialization strategy outside Canada. More specifically, project activities include acquiring the equipment needed to process fat into oil, including a sous vide cook tank and stirrer, and carrying out commercialization activities such as updating the transactional website, making ad placements and prospecting for new clients. The project consists in supporting the company start-up by commercializing a software platform for the diagnosis and prognosis of neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases (Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, epilepsy, etc.) in Canada and the United States. More specifically, project activities include hiring external resources who specialize in business and marketing strategies, participating in trade shows, making ad placements, prospecting for strategic partners, and obtaining certification and accreditation from Health Canada and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. CED's contribution will go toward all project costs.
Created in 2011 in Québec City, True Positive Medical Devices, which operates under True Positive MD, is a small technological business start-up that has developed a cloud-based software platform for quantitative radiology. Through its technology and biomarker data bank, the business provides health professionals with reports that facilitate magnetic resonance interpretation and help in the diagnosis and prognosis of neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases. |

Repayable contribution of $45,000 out of a total investment of $400,000
The project consists in starting up a technological business that is developing a small mobile autonomous robot whose primary application is to improve surveillance and security systems. The project's key activities include research and development and a set of product commercialization preparation activities (e.g. Internet site, market analyses, design and functionality update, trade shows and commercial prospecting meetings). CED's contribution will go exclusively toward the project's commercial activities.
9066713 Canada Inc. was founded in Québec City in 2014 and operates under the name "Umanx." It is a technological start-up operating in the optics and robotics sectors. The company has eight employees and its flagship product is Hektor, a mobile domestic robot that has multiple functions, including residential security, water leak detection and assistance for people. |
