The Women with Purpose - Mary Sheffield Award is presented annually to recognize the outstanding work of women who have provided exceptional service, achievement and leadership in addressing homelessness and poverty in Toronto. In 1886, Mary Sheffield began outreach to impoverished youth in downtown Toronto. Her work grew into Fred Victor— today's multi-service, non-profit organization operating 28 programs and services from 10 different sites across the City to 1,000 low-income and/or homeless Torontonians each day.
Fred Victor women's shelter and women's day drop-in are safe havens, sources of information and referral, and access points for health services for women who are homeless or living below the poverty line.
