OTTAWA, Nov. 1, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - The One Country, One Market national conference on free trade in Canada is being held today in Ottawa at the Shaw Centre. Numerous political figures, representing various industries and universities, will take part in this important discussion for the economic future of the country.
The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental and Northern Affairs and Internal Trade, columnist Andrew Coyne, the Honourable James Moore, Martha Hall Findlay, and the Honourable Darrell Dexter are among the renowned guests who will fuel the debate.
"The difficult renegotiation of NAFTA should send a clear signal to our governments that it is more important than ever to bring down trade barriers between the provinces," says Michel Kelly-Gagnon, President and CEO of the MEI.
While the provincial Premiers reached an agreement in principle this past summer concerning the interprovincial transport of alcoholic beverages, a large number of trade barriers remain.
"It is inconceivable that Canada is unable to enjoy an economic union in the same way as comparable countries or regions like the European Union or the United States," adds Marco Navarro-Genie, President of the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies.
The Supreme Court of Canada's ruling in the Comeau case has been a key factor in generating renewed interest in pursuing freer trade between the Canadian provinces.
"Our country's leaders need to find a creative solution this issue, which affects the very foundations of our country and its future prosperity. The time is now," declares Howard Anglin, Executive Director of the Canadian Constitution Foundation.
The One Country, One Market national conference is a joint initiative of the Canadian Constitution Foundation, the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies, and the MEI aiming to raise awareness among Canadians and politicians of every political stripe regarding the importance of having true free trade within our own borders.
