Friday in Prince Albert:The Child Find Challenge Cup, a hockey showdown for a
vital cause
PRINCE ALBERT, SK, Nov. 24 /CNW Telbec/ - Provincial and federal correctional officers will face off for the inaugural Child Find Challenge Cup in Prince Albert this Friday afternoon, November 26, during a hockey match that will not only raise funds for Child Find Saskatchewan, but promises to be a hard-fought battle for on-ice bragging rights in the city.
The game and a subsequent dance and silent auction are an initiative of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers (UCCO-SACC-CSN), which has adopted Child Find as a principal charity in the Prairie region.
Don Sather, vice-president of the federal correctional officers' union local at Saskatchewan Penitentiary, is the organizer of the event. He says the primary goal is to help a dedicated organization in its increasingly vital mission of finding missing children. But he promises no mercy for the team from the Prince Albert Correctional Centre.
"Make no mistake," Sather warned. "This is serious hockey. At Sask Pen we have eight skaters who have played in professional leagues. We intend to show our colleagues on the provincial side how the game is played!"
The puck will be dropped at 1:30 pm Friday at the Kinsmen Arena at 28th St. West and Central Ave. in Prince Albert (admission by donation), while the East End Community Club hall, at 2nd St. East and 10th Ave. East, will open its doors for the dance at 8 pm that evening.
Sather hopes to expand the event into a tournament next year, inviting teams from all emergency services agencies in the Prince Albert region to compete. "We're all competitive players here, but the real winners will be the kids," he concluded.
