Friedman, Manji, Chilton and Stanford to headline Higher Education Summit
TORONTO, Nov. 22, 2012 /CNW/ - More than 700 delegates from across Ontario will be attending the Higher Education Summit and the 2012 Premier's Awards for outstanding college graduates. The two-day event runs Sunday, Nov. 25 and Monday, Nov. 26 in Toronto.
Featured speakers this year are Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and author Thomas L. Friedman; bestselling author and New York University professor Irshad Manji; "Wealthy Barber" and TV "dragon" David Chilton; and Canadian Auto Workers economist Jim Stanford.
The Higher Education Summit, run by Colleges Ontario, is one of Canada's leading conferences on post-secondary education. This year's event includes the 20th anniversary celebration of the Premier's Awards for outstanding college graduates. There are 115 graduates nominated for this prestigious honour.
The conference is open to the media. All sessions take place at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel at 123 Queen Street West in Toronto. Media attending the conference must show accreditation at the registration desk on the concourse level.

Sunday, Nov. 25
1 p.m. to 2 p.m. - Featured speaker: Irshad Manji.
Manji, the bestselling author who directs the Moral Courage Project at New York University, will speak about giving young people a stronger voice. Location: Grand Ballroom, lower concourse.
2 p.m. to 3 p.m. - Feature presentation: What is the employment future for youth?
Panellists: Margaret Wente, columnist with the Globe and Mail; David W. Hughes, the president and chief executive officer of Pathways to Education; and Arina Kharlamova, a freelance writer and student. Location: Grand Ballroom, lower concourse.
3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. - Panel discussion: What is student success?
Panellists: Ann Buller, the president of Centennial College; Lesley Brown, the executive director of Essential Skills Ontario; and Ron (Deganadus) McLester, the special advisor to the vice president, student services, at Mohawk College. Location: City Hall room, second floor.
Monday, Nov. 26
8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. - Featured speaker: David Chilton.
Chilton, the author of the "Wealthy Barber" books and the newest dragon on CBC-TV's Dragons' Den, will speak about how to be successful. Location: Grand Ballroom, lower concourse.
9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. - Featured speaker: Jim Stanford.
The Canadian Auto Workers economist will address the myths and realities of the ugly economy. Location: Grand Ballroom, lower concourse.
10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. - Panel discussion: The future of post-secondary education.
Panellists: John Tibbits, the president of Conestoga College; Harvey Weingarten, the president and CEO of the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario; and Sheldon Levy, the president and vice-chancellor of Ryerson University. Location: Civic South room, second floor.
1 p.m. to 2:05 p.m. - Keynote address: Thomas L. Friedman.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and author will deliver the keynote address on the impact of globalization. Location: Grand Ballroom, lower concourse.
6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. - Premier's Awards gala. The MC is comedian James Cunningham, host of the TV show, Eat St. The Premier's Awards are presented in six categories: Business, Community Services, Creative Arts and Design, Health Sciences, Recent Graduate, and Technology.
