FRPO Welcomes Announcement on Housing Supply Consultation

TORONTO, Nov. 28, 2018 /CNW/ - The Federation of Rental Housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO) welcomes the Government of Ontario's release of further details on the consultation towards developing a Housing Supply Action Plan.

This consultation process builds on the important first step of creating an exemption from rent control for new units to incent more development of rental housing in the Province. Building more rental units will not only provide more choice to renters, but is a key component of addressing the affordability challenge.

It is refreshing to see a government that is looking to address the fundamental barriers that exist in the broader development process for rental housing. For too many years, there have been obstacles for new units to be built for the people of Ontario, including:

• The elimination of the post '91 exemption
• A slow Landlord and Tenant Board process
• General red tape in development approval process

"We are confident that this process will create an opportunity for the dialogue that will get new housing built in Ontario. Rental housing is a key part of the mix and we are encouraged by the early action in the Fall Economic Statement and the next steps announced today to set the path forward for further measures to address the supply issue. It demonstrates the government is serious about creating the housing options Ontarians need and deserve," said Tony Irwin, President and CEO of FRPO.
