Fujitsu to Demonstrate Industry's Best-Performing USB 3.0-SATA Bridge ICs at
the 2011 International CES, January 6-9
MB86E50 Series Delivers 393 MB/Second Throughput, with USB "SuperSpeed" Compatibility for Demanding RAID-enabled External Storage Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 17, 2010 /CNW/ -- Fujitsu Semiconductor America, Inc. (FSA) will demonstrate its newest USB 3.0-SATA controller products at the 2011 International CES (http://www.cesweb.org) in Las Vegas, Nevada, January 6 to 9.

At booth #36505 in the USB Community Section at CES, Fujitsu will present throughput and interoperability tests between the Fujitsu USB 3.0 host controllers and various motherboards and devices. Fujitsu will demonstrate the superior performance of the MB86E50 USB 3.0-SATA RAID IC in combination with the FrescoLogic FL1009B xHCI host controller chip and two RAID 0 (striping) configured SSDs. A second demonstration will highlight the high transfer speeds attainable with the Fujitsu MB86C31 series USB 3.0-SATA bridge controller IC and a single-port reference HDD/SSD system.

"The USB 3.0 SuperSpeed standard represents an exciting step forward for high-performance external storage applications - especially when combined with the greater throughput and reliability gains of RAID," said Yoshi Masuda, senior manager of marketing, Fujitsu Semiconductor America. "In throughput tests pairing the Fujitsu MB86E50 USB 3.0-SATA RAID IC and FrescoLogic FL1009B xHCI host controller chip, we have seen sequential write throughput exceed 390 MB/s and read throughput at almost 380 MB/s using two RAID 0 configured SSD devices. We believe that these results are the highest in the industry."

"Fresco Logic's certified USB 3.0 GoXtream xHCI host accelerator helps enable each USB port to sustain full bandwidth of USB 3.0 throughput. The combination of the Fujitsu MB86E50 with our FL1009B host controller delivers the very best performance for external storage applications based on USB 3.0," said Jeryuan Yan, Marketing Director, Fresco Logic. "The Fujitsu team has delivered a strong entry into this expanding market and we are pleased to be working with them to provide such excellent results."

The MB86C31 and MB86E50 series (see September 8, 2010, press release http://www.fujitsu.com/us/news/pr/fma_20100908.html) are the newest additions to the Fujitsu USB 3.0-SATA bridge IC family. The two new bridge ICs integrate a 32-bit RISC MPU, and are available with hardware-based high-speed encryption. Both the MB86C31 and MB86E50 series deliver throughput rates up to 5Gbps, permit hot plugging of devices, and support the USB-attached SCSI (UAS) and Bulk-only Transport (BOT) protocols. Both chips also offer full legacy support for high-speed USB (480Mbps) and full-speed USB (12Mbps) devices, as well as for ATA, SATA Gen2i (3Gbps) and SATA Gen1i (1.5Gbps) drives.

The MB86C31 series has earned the USB-IF certificate of compliance with SuperSpeed USB (see August 24, 2010, press release: http://www.fujitsu.com/us/news/pr/fma_20100824.html). Available in two small packages - a 64-pin LQFP (7mm x 7mm) and a 48-pin QFN (6mm x 6mm) - the MB86C31 offers manufacturers a high degree of design flexibility.

The MB86E50 series, also certified by the USB-IF to comply with SuperSpeed USB, (see September 15, 2010, press release: http://www.fujitsu.com/us/news/pr/fma_20100915.html), supports RAID 0 (striping) and RAID 1 (mirroring) as well as JBOD ("just a bunch of disks") and dual LUN configurations. Available in a compact 68-pin QFN (0.4mm pitch, 8mm x 8mm) package, the MB86E50 is an ideal design choice for demanding RAID storage applications that use external hard disk or solid state drives.

About Fujitsu Semiconductor America, Inc.

Fujitsu Semiconductor America, Inc.
