At Yonge-Dundas Square on August 7, 2014, Starting at 9 am
Cultivating the Spirit for Better Health
TORONTO, July 21, 2014 /CNW/ - Free introductory classes for the public, colourful dragon dances, presentations from local, national, and international dignitaries and a festive parade will mark our International Awareness Day on Thursday, August 7, to be held in downtown Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square starting at 9:00 am. A detailed schedule is available at http://www.taoist.org/iad/.
The theme of the festivities is Cultivating the Spirit for Better Health, which speaks to the unique mind-body health and healing benefits of these ancient Taoist practices. Taoist Tai Chi™ arts have been proven an effective tool to manage pain and maintain health. As spirituality columnist Micah Toub wrote in The Grid, "An all-body exercise that accommodates practitioners of all ages and levels of mobility, Tai Chi makes muscles more elastic, works the spine and nerves, and increases circulation and balance. Meanwhile, without one even trying—or, rather, because one is not trying—the mind finds peace."
Free public introductory sessions will begin at 9:00 am and start every 30 minutes until 1:30 pm. All are welcome to learn a few moves, while demos, speeches and the parade take place.
Special guests who will address the crowd starting at 10:00 am include: City of Toronto Councillors Norm Kelly (Scarborough-Agincourt) and Chin Lee (Scarborough-Rouge River); Member of Provincial Parliament Jack MacLaren (Carleton--Mississippi Mills); and Consul General for the United States, Jim Dickmeyer.
