WATERLOO, ON, May 29, 2013 /CNW/ - The remarkable thing is not so much that a tiny Waterloo magazine is nominated for eight (8) National Magazine Awards this year, but how it happened.
Unlike its multi-million dollar competitors, The New Quarterly is a literary magazine stitched together each issue by a fanatical gang of local volunteers.
"Money isn't everything," understates managing editor Melissa Krone, who along with editor Pamela Mulloy shares the 1.5 full-time staff positions at TNQ. The magazine operates in a donated space and prizes blank-on-one-side paper for office printing needs. In its constant search for new Canadian writers, TNQ relies on volunteer editors reading almost 700 manuscripts a year.
