366 beds now equipped with advanced bedside terminal systems
GATINEAU, QC, Sept. 16, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - It was a proud moment for Gatineau Healthcare Foundation and Extenway Solutions Inc. today, as the partners held a demonstration of the new multi-functional bedside terminals recently installed in Hull and Gatineau hospitals. The terminals, which employ ultramodern wireless technology, have been delivering internet access, online radio, games, audiobooks, a "teleworking" software program, videoconferences with family members for patients in isolation, plus digital TV direct to patient bedsides since early summer.
"A few months ago, these two hospitals could only offer conventional TV access. The entertainment experience that the new bedside monitors deliver in a hospital setting is something totally new in the Ottawa region. This commercial service, I should add, is consistent with a number of similar Foundation activities, whose revenues will help us avoid having to tap donations from the community in order to cover the administrative costs," said Gatineau Healthcare Foundation CEO, Marc Villeneuve.
"In a healthcare setting, we have to think in terms of the total experience for our patients. So it's important to provide everything that will help keep patients comfortable and promote their full recovery. The variety of entertainment and services available on these new bedside monitors is way beyond anything that's been available until now," said Julie Whissel, assistant chief of technical and systems support at the Gatineau Health and Social Services Centre.
Service includes clinical applications
Besides the impressive range of services provided for patients, the new monitor has additional functions and possibly even greater potential from a clinical standpoint. "The Foundation and Extenway have just given the Gatineau CSSS a new technological tool that features some very interesting applications. Right now we're working on ways to maximize the monitor's capabilities even further," Whissel said.
ExtenwayMD president, Jacky Chatelais, says the Gatineau hospital now has the technology and capacity for developing clinical applications that will let people work more efficiently and effectively. "By way of illustration, you could configure a patient's bedside terminal to put them in direct contact with the nursing station console," says Chatelais, "and this could generate real savings in terms of time and displacement."
The Gatineau Healthcare Foundation
The Foundation's mission is to raise funds to support the Gatineau Health and Social Services Centre (CSSS de Gatineau) in achieving its objectives for the well-being and health of members of the community.
