TORONTO, June 16, 2014 /CNW/ - The Toronto Port Authority today announced that the polls are open and people can now go to www.sailincinema.com to have their say on the movies that will play as part of the Toronto Port Authority's 4th annual Sail-In Cinema floating film festival.
From August 14 to 16, the popular Sail-In Cinema waterfront film event will once again transform Sugar Beach, located at 25 Dockside Drive, into Toronto's largest outdoor movie theatre, providing film fans on both land and sea with the unique opportunity to watch movies on a two-sided screen anchored to a barge in Lake Ontario. The theme for this year's Sail-In Cinema event is "Creature Craze" with all films sharing the common theme of creatures big and small playing a central role in the film plot.
"This is a community event and we want the community to have a say in the films that are screened at this year's festival," said Deborah Wilson, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, Toronto Port Authority. "This event is the first of its kind in the world and one of the highlights of the summer entertainment schedule in the City of Toronto. Sail-In Cinema represents a truly unique opportunity to enjoy a movie – be it classic, current or kitsch – under the stars and among others in the community. And the best part is that the public gets to decide whether we will watch bespectacled minions, a menacing shark or a homesick alien on the big screen this year."
From classic blockbusters to family favourites to current fare, this year's theme is broad enough to ensure that there's something for everyone to enjoy. Three movies in total will be chosen from a carefully curated short list of ten creature-related movies. The list is as follows:
- Big Fish
- E.T.
- Groundhog Day
- Jaws
- Jurassic Park
- Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds
- Despicable Me 2
- Gnomeo and Juliet
- Hotel Transylvania
- Labyrinth
Voting will remain open until July 16 and the three winning films will be announced shortly thereafter. Updates and early polling results will be released on social media platforms throughout the voting period. Once the movies have been chosen, free land-side tickets will be available from the Sail-In Cinema website; boaters will not require tickets. Movies will start at dusk (approximately 8:45 p.m.) on each of the three nights of the festival.
Sail-In Cinema was started in 2011 as part of the TPA's centennial celebrations. It has since grown from a weekend audience of 2,000 moviegoers and 70 boats to more than 6,500 moviegoers and 90 boats in 2013.
