LAVAL, QC, Dec. 1, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - Following Gilles Vaillancourt's plea of guilt, Laval Mayor Marc Demers said he was satisfied with the settlement. "Since the beginning of our mandate, we were committed to recover Laval citizens' money", reminded Mayor Demers, adding that many people believed that Gilles Vaillancourt, among others, would get away without punishment. "Since last April, we have been negotiating with his lawyers", outlined Mayor Demers before providing details of the settlement.
Details of the settlement
- Mr. Vaillancourt waived his $30,000. annual pension paid by the City. Total value of this pension is estimated at $500,000.
- He transferred his condominium ownership title to the City. Estimated value of $1 million.
- The City recovered $7.5 million from Mr. Vaillancourt.
- Gilles Vaillancourt is presently behind bars. Attorneys agreed to make a joint submission to the judge for a six-year prison sentence. The judge shall make his final decision on the matter shortly.
"Recovered amounts total $9 million. I am convinced that we were able to recover the maximum amounts possible from Mr. Vaillancourt. Damages he caused to the citizens were undoubtedly greater but we had to take his assets into account and I am positive that we got the maximum", stated Mayor Demers.
"The settlement has been authorized by Stéphanie Vallée, Quebec Justice Minister, following a recommendation by the City legal department and the government Voluntary reimbursement program (bill 26) and former Superior Court Chief Justice, the Honorable François Rolland", declared Mayor Demers.
"The amounts recovered today on behalf of Laval citizens prove us right for having undertaken all necessary actions to seek redress", concluded Laval Mayor, Marc Demers.
