2017 Canadian Winner – Lee Henderson
TORONTO, Oct. 10, 2017 /CNW/ - On October 12th, Glenfiddich® will unveil some of the works of 2017 Artist-in-Residence Recipient of the year, Lee Henderson, at an exhibit titled "And the voices came from nowhere" at Zalucky Contemporary Toronto.
On March 23rd, 2017 Glenfiddich® awarded artist Lee Henderson of Toronto with the coveted Glenfiddich® Artist in Residence (AiR) Prize. One of only eight awards across the globe each year, the AiR prize offers recipients the opportunity to live and work in the beautiful Scottish Highlands, directly out of the Glenfiddich® Distillery in Dufftown, a prize valued at $20,000 CDN.
During their residency, recipients will collaborate with other celebrated international artists from around the world to create a piece of work that relates to Glenfiddich®, which will be left behind to become a part of the distillery's rich heritage and add to the artistic landscape of the community. "After fifteen years we continue to be amazed and inspired by the wealth of creativity that is showcased through the Artist in Residence program," comments Beth Havers, Canadian Brand Ambassador for Glenfiddich®. "At Glenfiddich®, we champion the progressive spirit and continue to challenge the conventions of our craft each year. We are proud to see so many talented Canadians share in this once-in-a-lifetime experience."
Lee Henderson (b.1979) is a contemporary artist whose practice includes video, photography, installation, sculpture, performance, and text. His work moves in constant contemplation of death, in senses grand and minute, somewhere between the persistence of collective histories and the brevity of individual lives. Henderson has studied art in Canada and Germany, holding a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design (2003) and an MFA from the University of Regina (2005).
"We use the term "spirit" to describe ghosts; to describe an apparition come back to haunt us, or remind us, or watch over us, says Lee Henderson." "It can mean something that hangs in the aether, in an even-less-bodily sense, as affect or ideal. It refers also to alcohol, to liquor—to that which we inhale and then imbibe." Such nominative fluctuations formed the basis for Henderson's explorations while in residence at the Glenfiddich® Distillery during the summer of 2017.
The exhibition will be hosted by Glenfiddich® AiR curator, Andy Fairgrieve, all the way from Dufftown, Scotland. The Glenfiddich® AIR Prize has sponsored more than 100 artists since its inception since 2002. Canadian artists include Eleanor King (2016), Jon Sasaki (2015), artistic duo, Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky (2014), Daniel Barrow (2013), Jillian Mcdonald (2012), Helen Cho (2011), Damian Moppett (2010), Arabella Campbell (2009), Dave Dyment (2008), Jonathon Kaiser (2007), Annie Pootoogook (2006) and Myfanwy Macleod (2005).
