TORONTO, Feb. 13, 2012 /CNW/ - Global's 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards had a big night last night with incredible performances by music's finest as well as a touching tribute to the late Whitney Houston. The Awards set a new record as the most-watched GRAMMY broadcast in 11 years.
Adele was the big winner of the night walking away with six GRAMMY Awards and showcasing her voice for the first time since her surgery. Her much anticipated return combined with amazing performances from Bruce Springsteen, Rihanna and Coldplay drew in 4.6 million Canadians + 37% more viewers than in 2011 (Ind. 2+). The three-hour broadcast peaked at 10:09pm with 5.6 million (Ind. 2+) watching as Adele took to the stage for her spectacular performance of "Rolling in the Deep."
Leading up to the awards broadcast, 1.2 million viewers (Ind. 2+) watched ET Canada's Cheryl Hickey, Rick Campanelli and Roz Weston as they interviewed the stars during the one-hour live red carpet pre-show special. The Grammy Awards: ET Canada Live was up 74% year-over-year and was the highest rated GRAMMY pre-show in its seven year run.
DATA HIGHLIGHTS (All data A18-49 unless otherwise indicated):
- The total reach number for the GRAMMY Awards was 13.2 million viewers, up 28% from 2011 (Ind. 2+, national)
- The GRAMMYs won the night both nationally and in the 3 metered markets (Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver) with 2.2 million viewers in the key demo
- Awards broadcast was up by 33% year-over-year nationally
