MONTREAL, Sept. 17, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - In the wake of its partnership with In Town Without My Car, the STM is pleased to invite the public to the Go Green Event - Ride and Save, taking place September 21 and 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the corner of St. Catherine Street and McGill College Avenue. Promotions, contests, fun activities and artistic ones, and even a glimpse into the future are in store for the two-day event. McGill College Avenue will be closed to car traffic for the occasion, between St. Catherine and De Maisonneuve, making way for AZUR, Montréal's new metro car!
AZUR: the future is near
Indeed, people attending the event will have a chance to visit the future railcar for the Montréal métro, named AZUR, that transit users can expect to see running in 2014. This first outside appearance will provide an excellent opportunity for visitors to discover AZUR's many qualities, including the free circulation between railcars, larger windows, four multi-function LCD screens, improved ventilation and optimized interior layout for better universal access. One has to see AZUR to understand what the future holds for public transit users in Montréal!
Street animation and activities for the whole family
A former STM bus converted into a promotional vehicle, the Funambus will be on hand throughout the event. Les Étoiles du metro, the talented métro musicians who were selected in a competition last winter, will be performing on the Funambus stage. Free performances will be on-going during these two days.
The STM's entire animation team will also be there, while supersized games, such as the popular bean bag toss, wheel of fortune and babyfoot, will entertain young and old. Participants can win one of many prizes, including fare cards and gift certificates from such preferred partners as the Eaton Centre, Simons, Complexe Les Ailes and Old Navy.
And one cannot mention St. Catherine Street without thinking shopping! During the Go Green Event - Ride and Save, several local retailers and large shopping venues, from Cours Mont-Royal to Promenades Cathédrale, are offering discounts and special promotions to customers presenting an STM fare card.
Using public transit leads to fewer vehicles on the road. So it was perfectly natural for the STM to take part in Parking Day, an event that aims to reconvert parking spaces. The artistic and creative occupation of six parking spots along St. Catherine Street by artists and creative talents sponsored by the STM invites people to reflect upon cities without cars.
Celebrating public transportation
The STM has been a proud partner of the AMT as part of In Town Without My Car since the activity was first initiated 10 years ago. The STM will also be part of that event in the Old Port, with information stands and a hybrid bus for viewing.
Take the whole family
As September 22 is a Saturday, the Family Outings promotion will be available, allowing up to five children under the age of 12 to ride STM transit for free if they are with an adult holding a valid fare card. To find out more and check bus timetables, go to www.stm.info
