13 Canadians to date confirmed for Canada's National Open Championship; additional exemptions to be announced in the coming weeks

OAKVILLE, ON, July 4, 2013 /CNW/ - (Golf Canada) - Golf Canada and RBC announced today a list of Canadians that have been extended tournament exemptions to compete in the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club, July 22 to 28, 2013, in Oakville, Ontario.
Among those extended tournament exemptions are current Web.com Tour players Adam Hadwin of Abbottsford, B.C. and Roger Sloan of Merritt, B.C., as well as Team Canada graduates Eugene Wong of Vancouver, Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont. and Albin Choi of Toronto.
Hadwin, the fourth-ranked Canadian on the World Golf Rankings who earned the Rivermead Cup as the Low Canadian at both the 2010 and 2011 RBC Canadian Opens, currently sits 67th on the Web.com Tour money list. This past weekend, he recorded his best finish of the 2013 Web.com Tour season finishing fifth at the United Leasing Championship. Hadwin will be competing in his fourth RBC Canadian Open.
Sloan, who currently sits 135th on the Web.com money list after competing in 13 events, earned his 2013 Web.com status by finishing tied for 73rd at the 2012 PGA TOUR Final Qualifying Tournament. A former winner and graduate of PGA TOUR Canada, Sloan will be competing in his third RBC Canadian Open.
Wong, a graduate of Team Canada and former collegiate standout at the University of Oregon is coming off an impressive rookie season on PGA TOUR Canada where he won two of the four events he competed including the Great Waterway Classic and the Canadian Tour Championship. The 2010 winner of the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Award will be competing in his fourth RBC Canadian Open.
Rounding out the list of Canadian exemptions announced today is a pair of Team Canada graduates who recently turned professional - Albin Choi and Mackenzie Hughes. Choi, a standout collegiate player at North Carolina State where he won eight tournaments and former 2010 Canadian Men's Amateur Championship, will be competing in his third RBC Canadian Open. Hughes, winner of both the 2011 and 2012 Canadian Men's Amateur Championship and graduate of Kent State University, will be competing in his second RBC Canadian Open.
Other Canadians who have already earned exemptions include Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, winner of the 2012 Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship, as well as recently crowned 2013 PGA Championship of Canada winner Bryn Parry of Vancouver. Parry, who earned his exemption as the top golfer on the PGA of Canada Player Rankings following the completion of last week's championship will compete in his second RBC Canadian Open while Carrigan's appearance in Canada's National Open Championship will be his first.
Also set to compete for the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey is Brian Hadley of Sarnia, Ont. who earned an exemption after winning the Ontario Regional Qualifier held Tuesday at Greystone Golf Club in Milton, Ont.
To date, a total of 13 Canadians are confirmed for the 2013 RBC Canadian Open, with Hadwin, Sloan, Wong, Choi, Hughes, Parry, Hadley and Carrigan joining previously confirmed Canadians Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., Brad Fritsch of Manotick, Ont., Stephen Ames of Calgary and Mike Weir of Bright's Grove, Ont. Each will be looking to become the first Canadian since Pat Fletcher in 1954 to win Canada's National Open title.

The third of three regional Qualifiers held in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec wrapped up Wednesday (July 3rd) at Club de Golf de l'île de Montréal in Montreal with the top 10 competitors earning a spot into the Final Monday Qualifier on Monday, July 23rd at Heron Point Golf Links in Alberton, Ont.
In addition, 13 players from B.C. Regional Qualifier held last month at Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria as well as 20 players from the Ontario Regional Qualifier at Greystone Golf Club have advanced to the Final Monday Qualifier.
Four exemptions into the 2013 RBC Canadian Open are available through the Final Monday Qualifier.
Additional tournament exemptions will be announced in the coming weeks including a trio of exemptions which are up for grabs through the PGA TOUR Canada Order of Merit following the Player's Championship in Winnipeg which concludes on July 21st.
The Canadian contingent will look to challenge a world class field of PGA TOUR stars that includes World No. 5 Matt Kuchar, World No. 7 Luke Donald, 2012 FedEx Cup champion and World No. 8 Brandt Snedeker, World No. 9 Graeme McDowell, World No. 13 Charl Schwartzel, World No. 17 Bubba Watson, World No. 20 Ernie Els, World No. 22 Hunter Mahan, World No. 23 Dustin Johnson, two-time Canadian Open champion and World No. 28 Jim Furyk, World Golf Hall of Fame member Vijay Singh and defending RBC Canadian Open champion Scott Piercy.
