OTTAWA, May 4, 2016 /CNW/ - A call for proposals under Parks Canada's newly expanded National Cost-Sharing Program for Heritage Places is being launched to ensure the protection of national historic sites, heritage lighthouses and railway stations. Through Budget 2016's investment in social infrastructure, an additional $20M is being made available over the next two years for this program. The Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, made the announcement today.
National historic sites are tied to our heritage and our identity as Canadians. These investments are a way of preserving our heritage places while strengthening the tourism sector. They also support the economy through job opportunities for skilled construction and conservation professionals to work on these historic places.
Funding will be made available to all heritage places that have been formally recognized, but are not administered, by the federal government. In addition to national historic sites, under the new expanded program, heritage railway stations and heritage lighthouses are also eligible for funding. The maximum available assistance will be 50% of eligible costs incurred in the conservation of a heritage place, up to $1 million, or 50% of eligible costs incurred towards preparatory or presentation work, up to $25,000.
The deadline to submit an application is June 17, 2016. Additional information and application forms are available on Parks Canada's website.
