Government of Canada helping more young people in Montréal gain skills and experience for success Français
14,500 youth have benefitted since 2015
MONTRÉAL, March 11, 2019 /CNW/ - Canada's prosperity depends on young Canadians launching meaningful careers. By helping them gain the skills and experience they need for a fair chance at success, we are investing in our greatest asset—our people.
Today, the Honorable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, spoke about Canada's Youth Employment Strategy and highlighted its success in Montréal.
Since 2015, the Government of Canada has provided over $63.5 million to organizations throughout Montréal for programming that supports skills training and meaningful work opportunities for young Canadians. This hard work and collaboration has resulted in about 14,500 young people receiving training and employment under the three streams of the Youth Employment Strategy: Skills Link, Career Focus and Canada Summer Jobs.
Minister Hajdu spoke at an event with Accès-Travail de Montréal, whose project has been funded for over $1.25 million under Skills Link. The Accès-Travail project supports young Canadians with barriers to employment gain employment skills and paid work experience with local businesses.

- Canada's future prosperity depends on young people getting the education and work experience they need to start careers. Each year, the Government invests over $330 million in the Youth Employment Strategy to help young people gain the skills and work experience they need to find and keep good quality jobs.
- Through Budget 2018, the Government committed an additional $448.5 million over five years to the Youth Employment Strategy. This funding will support the increased number of job opportunities available to young Canadians funded under the Canada Summer Jobs program.
- Skills Link helps youth facing barriers to employment—including single parents, youth with disabilities, young newcomers and youth in rural and remote areas—to develop the skills and gain the experience needed to find a job or return to school.
- The Career Focus program helps post-secondary graduates transition to the labour market through paid internships and helps provide them with the information and experience they need to make informed career decisions, find a job and/or pursue advanced studies.
- The Canada Summer Jobs program provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create summer job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30.
