BRANDON, MB, May 14, 2013 /CNW/ - Merv Tweed, Member of Parliament for Brandon—Souris, on behalf of Canada's Environment Minister, the Honourable Peter Kent, today announced funding from the EcoAction Community Funding Program for a new environmental project in Brandon, Manitoba. Brandon Riverbank Inc. will receive $99,856 in federal funding to support local action to protect wildlife and natural habitat.
"I am pleased that the Government of Canada is helping to restore this important native habitat in the City of Brandon by supporting Brandon Riverbank Inc.'s project," said MP Tweed. "Through this project, our community will help reforest important riparian areas damaged in the flood of 2011 and increase biodiversity across the city."
"Our government is taking real action to address the environmental priorities of Canadians and ensure we have clean air, clean water, and biologically diverse land for generations to come," said Minister Kent. "EcoAction Community Funding supports community groups across the country willing to take concrete action through on-the-ground environmental projects. We are proud to partner with these organizations all over the country that are committed to conserving Canada's natural legacy."
This project will bring together 180 community volunteers to begin replanting 1500 indigenous trees in three Brandon parks damaged by the flood of 2011—Eleanor Kidd Park, Queen Elizabeth Park and Dinsdale Park.
"The loss of trees due to the extended high water of 2011 has greatly affected our parks, pathways and the health of the Assiniboine River and riparian habitat that surrounds it," said Lois MacDonald, Manager, Riverbank Development and Tourism Services, Riverbank Discovery Centre. "This funding brings us one step closer to reclaiming and restoring the Assiniboine River Corridor throughout our community."
The EcoAction Community Funding Program supports projects that engage Canadians to rehabilitate, protect or enhance the natural environment, and builds the capacity of communities and individuals to ensure future protection.
