WHITEHORSE, Nov. 13, 2013 /CNW/ - Ryan Leef, Member of Parliament for Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, today announced funding for an important safety improvement project at the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport.
The Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport is receiving $6,468,186 through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), for the rehabilitation of the runway apron panels which will help maintain the safe operation of the airfield for both passengers and airport employees. The Government of Yukon is also providing $1,141,445 towards this project.
"The Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport is an important aviation hub for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said MP Leef. "This funding will enhance the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses in this region."
"These improvements will enhance the airport's capacity to safely manage present and future aircraft and passenger traffic," said Minister of Highways and Public Works Wade Istchenko. "The Yukon government is committed to enabling an efficient and well-functioning airport for Yukoners and visitors alike."
To date, through ACAP, the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport has received more than $8.3 million for six projects, including today's announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $608 million for 758 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with over one million net new jobs created since July 2009.
