LETHBRIDGE, AB, Aug. 14, 2013 /CNW/ - Jim Hillyer, Member of Parliament for Lethbridge, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, today announced funding for an important safety improvement project at the Lethbridge Airport.
The Lethbridge Airport is receiving $187,944, through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), for the replacement of a snowplow truck which will ensure the timely and effective removal of snow, slush and ice from runways and taxiways.
"The Lethbridge Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said MP Hillyer. "This funding will enhance the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses in Southern Alberta."
"The County of Lethbridge is grateful for the ACAP funding for the snowplow truck," said Reeve Lorne Hickey. "This new equipment, along with the snow blower and runway condition reporting system we received earlier in the year, greatly helps airport staff to safely maintain the runways at the Lethbridge Airport. This funding helps us maintain an up-to-date infrastructure."
To date, through ACAP, the Lethbridge Airport has received more than $8.8 million for nine projects, including today's announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $606 million for 751 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with over 965,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
