NANAIMO, BC, May 31, 2013 /CNW/ - Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo—Alberni, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced funding for a safety improvement project at the Nanaimo Airport.
The Nanaimo Airport is receiving $29,739 through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) to purchase an electronic runway condition reporting system. This new system will provide timely, accurate and precise wireless reporting and recording of runway conditions.
"The Nanaimo Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said Dr. Lunney. "This funding will enhance the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses on Vancouver Island."
"The new electronic system will allow airport staff to report surface conditions to NAV CANADA directly from their vehicle on the runway," said Mike Hooper, President and CEO, Nanaimo Airport Commission. "This equipment will also allow pilots to receive runway condition information much sooner during rain and winter conditions which will enhance safety for travellers."
To date, through ACAP, the Nanaimo Airport has received more than $3.7 million for 16 projects, including today's announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $606 million for 749 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 910,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
